REL Completes M&E Package for £34M College Building
REL Building Services has completed the M&E package for a new £34 million campus at Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC).
The state-of-the-art building, which was built by ISG, welcomed its first students in February 2020. Targeted to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, it features five floors of new facilities spanning 161,000 sq ft.
Following extensive design work during the scheme’s pre-construction stage, REL has installed a vast range of M&E services into the new facility, which features business incubation space, a 160-seat theatre, art gallery, restaurant, and learning environments comprising advanced digital technology. The solution included 228 photovoltaic panels, a 50kW air source heat pump, an advanced Building Management System (BMS) and more than 1,800 data points.
Toby Buckley, managing director of REL said: “The design, size and location of the building meant that this was a complex project. Situated at the Twickenham campus, which remained operational throughout the work, the site also faces Twickenham Stadium, next to the busy A316. Because of the risk of noise and pollution, windows can’t be opened in the new building, so this required the design and installation of a full mechanical ventilation system, including full comfort cooling.
“This installation was made more challenging by the shape of the large trapezium-shaped atrium area which takes up nearly a third of the building. Building services, including ventilation and smoke ventilation systems, had to be fully integrated into this unusually shaped area.”
Richard White, project director at ISG added: “REL used extensive BIM modelling techniques to develop an M&E solution that met all requirements in terms of efficiency, compliance and budget. Their input and technical expertise has helped us to deliver an exceptional new learning environment that will benefit thousands of students as well as staff and the wider community.”
