High profile project places REL in awards final

The M&E specialist has been shortlisted in the HVAC Project of the Year (Over £0.5m) category for its role in delivering a new £34m facility at Richmond upon Thames College.

The REL team was appointed by main contractor ISG to design and install a multi-million-pound M&E package for a new five-storey teaching block, which spans 161,000 sq ft. Facilities include high-specification learning environments featuring TV studios, a 3D prototyping fabrication laboratory and a digital golf studio. A 160-seat theatre, art gallery, chef’s academy, with full commercial kitchen and a bookable restaurant space, have also been created, alongside a spa and wellness centre.

REL’s managing director Toby Buckley said: “We’re really proud that our work at this state-of-the-art teaching facility has been recognised by the judges of these long-standing and respected awards.

“The nature of the building and its design required a complex and highly efficient M&E solution. This meant that our team had to carry out two years of intensive design work, including BIM modelling, prior to the project going to site. Our collaborative approach realised many benefits including significant cost, performance and environmental efficiencies.”

The publication of the H&V News Awards shortlist follows the news that REL has also made the final of the Construction News Specialist Awards 2020 and is in the running to be named MEP Specialist of the Year. Construction News’ expert panel of 69 judges – with representatives from each of the top 25 biggest UK contractors – determined the shortlist with the finalists now going through to a second phase to decide the winners.

Toby added: “The last 12 months have been our busiest and most successful, following the award of several major projects for leading UK contractors. As a team, we’ve worked incredibly hard, so it’s fantastic to see our efforts and skills acknowledged by our peers.

“Making the final of both awards against such tough competition is an achievement in itself so we’re now looking forward to the ceremonies and celebrating our successes with other leading firms.”

The H&V News Awards are the longest running, largest and most celebrated ceremony for the building services industry attracting more than 1,000 guests. The winners will be announced in London on 30 April 2020.
